Nuclear power is our gateway to a prosperous future -dr APJ Abdul kalam

Nuclear power is our gateway to a prosperous future

© By Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India &
Mr. Srijan Pal Singh, Expert in Sustainable Development

Every single atom in the universe carries an unimaginably powerful battery
within its heart, called the nucleus. This form of energy, often called Type-1 fuel,
is hundreds of thousands of times more powerful than the conventional Type-0 fuels,
which are basically dead plants and animals existing in the form of coal, petroleum,
natural gas and other forms of fossil fuel. Imagine a kilometre-long train, with
about 50 freight bogies, fully laden with about 10,000 tonnes of coal.
The same amount of energy can be generated by 500 kg of Type-1 fuel, naturally
occurring Uranium, enough to barely fill the boot of a small car. When the
 technology is fully realised,

Types of government-1.democracy 2.republic 3.monarchy 4.aristocracy 5.dictatorship 5.democractic republic

Types of government

Governments can be classified into several types. Some of the more
common types of governments are:
1.democracy 2.republic 3.monarchy 4.aristocracy 5.dictatorship 5.democractic republic

1. Democracy
The word "democracy" literally means "rule by the people." In a democracy,
the people govern.

2. Republic
A literal democracy is impossible in a political system containing more
than a few people. All "democracies" are really republics. In a republic,
the people elect representatives to make and enforce laws.

3. Monarchy
A monarchy consists of rule by a king or queen. Sometimes a king is
called an "emperor," especially if there is a large empire, such as China
before 1911. There are no large monarchies today. The United Kingdom,
which has a queen, is really a republic because the queen has virtually
no political power.

4. Aristocracy
An aristocracy is rule by the aristocrats. Aristocrats are typically wealthy,
educated people. Many monarchies have really been ruled by aristocrats.
Today, typically, the term "aristocracy" is used negatively to accuse
a republic of being dominated by rich people, such as saying,
"The United States has become an aristocracy."

5. Dictatorship
A dictatorship consists of rule by one person or a group of people. Very few
dictators admit they are dictators; they almost always claim to be leaders
of democracies. The dictator may be one person, such as Castro in Cuba or
Hitler in Germany, or a group of people, such as the Communist Party in China.

6. Democratic Republic
Usually, a "democratic republic" is not democratic and is not a republic.
A government that officially calls itself a "democratic republic" is
usually a dictatorship. Communist dictatorships have been especially prone
to use this term. For example, the official name of North Vietnam
was "The Democratic Republic of Vietnam." China uses a variant,
"The People's Republic of China.

FDI in multi brand retail

Knowing about FDI in multi brand retail

By - Dhiraj Singh, Director (M&C), P.I.B

FDI in multi brand retail

The Government has decided to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) upto 51% in multi  brand retail. This means that global retailers can come to India with a local partner and set up stores in the country.   Till now FDI was not allowed in multi brand retail. However, there were big multi brand retail outlets owned by Indian entities.

This decision is an enabling policy that will open up new windows of opportunity to modernize the retail sector particularly for agricultural products and the small-scale sector.

The benefits would be for all:

The farmer will get a better price for their produce as middlemen will be removed
and retailers will buy directly from farmers.  Farmers’ losses from wastages specially
in vegetables and fruits will come down.

The small scale sector will find new buyers and cheap and better quality
source for their products.

Bio-diesel-an ECO-friendly fuel

Bio-diesel-an ECO-friendly fuel

Tarit Mukherjee*

As our lifestyles become more 'developed' by the day, so does the damage we do
to the environment. Our every move, from watching television, to working at a computer,
to taking a flight to our favourite holiday destination harms the environment in one way
or the other. Air and water pollution levels are increasing world over by the day.
Never before has the need to use alternative resources, such as wind, solar and
nuclear energy been so high.

India is one of the largest petroleum consuming and importing countries. India imports
about 70 % of its petroleum demands. The current yearly consumption of diesel oil in
India is approximately 40 million tones constituting about 40% of the total petro-product consumption. Bio-diesel can be the major replacement in terms of petro-product
consumption by India which is eco-friendly too.

Indian space programme

Indian space programme-Recent successful missions

Indian Space Programme is an indigenous effort with a capability to meet various
socio-economic developmental needs of the country. The major impetus has been to
exploit and develop space-technology and applications that are relevant for India.
INSAT system has been established for providing services in communication,
broadcasting and meteorology. The Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellite system
has been established for the natural resource management. ISRO has built indigenous
capability to launch satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Polar Sun- synchronous
orbit as well as Geo-Synchronous satellite orbits through PSLV and GSLV launchers
respectively. PSLV was also used to undertake an un-manned mission to the Moon.
ISRO has carved a niche for itself among space faring nations through its successful
application driven programmes which has benefited the country immensely.

  Successful Missions

* India's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C17) in its
nineteenth flight successfully launched GSAT-12 communication
satellite on July 15, 2011. This is the eighteenth successive successful
flight of PSLV which has once again proved its versatility and
reliability GSAT-12 Communication satellite with a mass of
1410 kg at lift-off, has 12 Extended C-band transponders and has been
successfully placed in Geosynchronous Orbit. GSAT-12 will
enhance space based applications in the area of tele-medicine,
tele-education and disaster management support.

* India's advanced communication satellite, GSAT-8 - weighing about 3100 kg at lift-off, was successfully launched into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) on May 21, 2011 by the Ariane-V launch vehicle from Kourou. French INSAT system and carries 24 high power transponders in Kuband and a two-channel GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) payload operating in L1 and L5 bands.

Tiger reserves in india

Tiger reserves in india

Tiger - large carnivore of the cat family, Panthera tigris, found in the forests of Asia.
There are six subspecies of P. tigris: Amur or Siberian, Sumatran, Malayan, North Indochinese,
Bengal, and South China or Amoy. Tigers are the largest species of the cat family. Male
tigers are generally about 8 to 10 ft (2.4-3 m) long, including the 3-ft (1.8-m) tail. The Siberian
tiger may be 13 ft (4 m) long, including the tail, and weigh 290 kg, much larger than any lion.
The coat of the tiger is orange-yellow with numerous prominent black stripes; black and
albino specimens are sometimes found. The Siberian tiger tends to be the lightest in coloring.
The male tiger has no mane comparable to that of a lion , although it may
have a ruff around the sides of the head.

India holds over half the world's tiger population. According to the latest tiger
census report released on March 28, 2011 by the National Tiger Conservation Authority,
the current tiger population estimated is 1,706 (i.e. ranging between a minimum of
1,571 to a maximum of 1,875). The results include figures from 17 Indian states with
a tiger population.

Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission
National solar mission: The NAPCC aims to promote the development and use of
solar energy for power generation and other uses with the ultimate objective of making
solar competitive with fossil-based energy options. The plan includes:
Specific goals for increasing use of solar thermal technologies in urban areas, industry,
and commercial establishments;
A goal of increasing production of photovoltaics to 1000 MW/year; and
A goal of deploying at least 1000 MW of solar thermal power generation.
Other objectives include the establishment of a solar research center, increased international
collaboration on technology development, strengthening of domestic manufacturing capacity,
and increased government funding and international support.
National mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Current initiatives are
expected to yield savings of 10,000 MW by 2012.  Building on the Energy Conservation
Act 2001, the plan recommends:

Mandating specific energy consumption decreases in large energy-consuming industries,
    with a system for companies to trade energy-savings certificates;
Energy incentives, including reduced taxes on energy-efficient appliances; and
Financing for public-private partnerships to reduce energy consumption through
demand-side management programs in the municipal, buildings and agricultural sectors.
